ABOUT THE SERIES:

 “Generation Next: Bridging the Science and Technology Divide” is a five part video series exploring science & technology literacy issues and solutions which impact underprivileged young people from underserved neighborhoods. 

Despite the explosion of computer availability, there remains a significant divide between historically disadvantaged youth and other young people who benefit from access to computer technology, a quality science education and information resources. The reasons for the divide vary, but often point to environmental circumstances such as the quality of reading, math and science education, economics and culture. The problems, causes and effects, as well as the solutions that are offered underserved communities, are presented in each of the five half-hour “Bridging the Divide” episodes. Topics include:

EPISODE # 1

Technology Access
This episode looks at community efforts to provide access to technology in communities that are underserved. It also provides insight into the benefits derived from the implementation of tech literacy programs among young people, with few options in seeking access and who are historically disadvantaged.
 
Features: Community activist, technology experts and program directors discuss the challenges of providing access to technology to lower income populations and underserved communities. Issues involving program funding, volunteers, licensing and curriculum are some of the topics covered. – Roundtable discussions, interviews and conference footage.
 
Setting: On location in communities where tech literacy programs are being implemented – tech center footage, classroom type settings, etc.
 
Highlights: Successful outcomes – Historically disadvantaged people who are benefiting from these programs and their contribution to society. Corporate perspectives, job and workforce experts, small business-entrepreneurs, etc., are featured in this part of episode #1.
